| Why join? When there is bad news for our state budget, we can expect ongoing struggles over the basic support we need to do our jobs. Should we prioritize airplanes or libraries? Athletics or scholarship? Food courts or manageable class sizes? Pay raises for a few or paid family leave for everyone? We need a voice in such difficult decisions. When our legislature contemplates insulating classrooms from controversy and correcting perceived political imbalances, academic freedom is at risk. When administrators invite high-priced efficiency experts to assess the allocation of university resources, we should worry about the autonomy of our departments and programs. The AAUP is the nation’s largest and oldest organization representing university faculty. The national organization has already given us crucial support.
